Planning a study or work abroad will really help a person in dealing with the new changes that take place as soon as you are in a new environment. Planning makes it easy to adjust to the new culture, people, city/place, classmates or workmates. Planning your study or work abroad will make the experience more acceptable and pleasurable. Planning includes preparing and having a goal in mind as you start your travel

Here is a guide on how to plan a study / work abroad:

  • Passport. Check the validity or expiration of your passport. It is practical to have a passport that is valid months before the end of you studies abroad or work abroad. Be sure to have a photocopy of all the important documents that you have. Leave a copy at home with somebody that you can contact anytime. Also leave a copy together with your luggage; this is to ensure that you have a copy if your passport is lost.
  • Visa. Visa application takes a long time so apply for it the earliest time possible. And if you already got one also make sure that you leave a copy at home and inside your luggage beside the original copy. Visa requirements vary from country to country.
  • Travel arrangements. Make your travel arrangements known to the agency, company, and host family and of course your own immediate family. Host families and the company should be informed ahead of time of your travel arrangements so that they can make appointments as they fetch you from the airport.
  • Destination, address and telephone numbers. It is but practical to memorize the name of the host family or company, address and their contact numbers. This helps a lot when you are in a strange place and nobody understand you. And blurting out a full name and address makes people around you understand that you are lost and you wanted to go a certain place. Family members should also have contact details with the agency that help you with your study abroad or your work abroad.
  • Power of Attorney. A power of attorney is a paper singed by you to authorize somebody as your agent or in behalf of you legally. This is significant to those who have assets. And advantageous in emergency cases.
  • Try to arrange on how you pay your tuition fees while you are away.
  • Physical Preparation. Before going abroad ask your doctor of the possible vaccines that you can acquire before you go study or work abroad. Usually, agency who hired you or helped you with your study abroad will advise you on what vaccines to have before departure. If you are taking something or you got prescription be sure to bring enough supply before you leave.
  • Insurance. This is very important for students and workers. Accident and Health Insurance are practical decisions for every traveller. Get insurance with clear conditions.
  • Money. Make sure you have an idea of how much you will spend on daily basis. So that you can prepare the closest approximation budget for it. Get a travellers’ check or credit cards so your money has a protection. You are advised to bring only a small amount of money that would cover your travel expenses and travel allowance. But please do check with the country’s consulate. Poorer country doesn’t accept transactions like traveller’s check and credit cards.
  • Packing. Some agency would give a list on what to pack and tips on what to bring. But for first time workers going abroad it would be best to browse over the net on tips of packing things. I am sure travellers would share secrets on what to bring abroad.
  • Mental preparation. This is the most important of all preparation. If mentally you are not ready to go through the changes then a great problem occurs. As you pack your things for your study and work abroad. You should also pack yourself mentally. Listing down of goals as you fly to the new country. And stick to that goal. Flexibility and dynamism should be on your number one list. An internet research about the effects of going to work abroad or a study abroad should be thoroughly read. This can help buffer the real effects of going abroad either to work or study.
